The name `Sula`

Sula is certainly one of the oldest names in the island kingdom of Frøya. The name comes from the word `sule`, which has two meanings: (i) cleft, something which is cleaved or split; and (ii) pillar, column. The latter is probably the oldest and we assume that `Sula` derives from this. Among the Suls islands, `Stor-Suln` (Sulshaugen) is so prominent that it would be reasonable to adobt such an `exaggerative` name.

Sula and Sulsværet

Sulsværet is a group of islands on the frontline facing the open sea, 15 kilometres beyond the main island of Frøya. From the 35-metre high Sulshaugen, the highest point on Stor-Sula, you can look out over a wonderful island kingdom. At one time the Sula estate used to embrace several smaller island groups, such as Fjølværet, Lyngværet, Vågsvær, Humlingsværet, and at one time also the Kya fishing station. Sula is one of the great fishing estate in Midt-Norge. Since olden times the estate consisted of a very close-knit settlement on the west side of Sulsvågen. Despite the land resources appearing modest, a large number of cows and sheep were kept on Sula roughly up until the Second World War. The cattle normally grazed at `føllingen`, the fields east of Sulsvågen during the summer but it was not unknown for them to swim to other islands around the estate.

Sula has a rich history – we hope the following will provide you with an insight.
